News of Majek Fashek's death hit the Nigerian music industry hard. The 57-year-old reggae star was reported to have died in a hospital in New York after a protracted illness.

Nigerian music stars took to social media to pay tribute to the reggae icon after his death was confirmed by his manager, Omenka Uzoma, on Instagram.

The singer, songwriter, and guitarist, who was known as Nigeria's Bob Marley with a touch of Fela Kuti's vibes, had a style which he referred to as 'kpangolo' and infused with juju, fuji.

His award-winning song, "Send Down the Rain", from his "Prisoner of Conscience" album fetched him the name "The Rainmaker."
It was after the release of the album in 1988 that the reggae icon gained prominence in Nigeria and across the globe.

Other international artists he worked with before his death were Tracy Chapman, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Jackson, and Snoop Dogg. He also appeared on the 'Late Night with David Letterman' show where he performed his song, 'So Long, Too Long.'

The Edo State native's stage name was not always Majek Fashek. To many who knew him in the early 1980s as a member of the Benin-based reggae group, Jastix, the Rainmaker was Rajesh Kanal.
